Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
