Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
