Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
